INSTRUCTIONS FOR
MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION
‘AYU’
- A Quarterly Peer Reviewed Journal of Research in Ayurveda, is
devoted to the publication of the original articles on the
utilization of knowledge of Ayurveda and other traditional
systems of medicines. The spectrum of coverage is broad,
encompassing all eight divisions of Ayurveda viz. Basic
Principles of Ayurveda, History, Surgery, Descriptions of herbal
remedies, useful for the treatment of human aliments etc. It
also deals with clinical and pharmacological evaluation of
herbs, minerals and animals products, validation of food
remedies, phytochemistry, ethnomedicine, survey of medicinal
plants, nutraceuticals, drug standardization, biotechnology,
agriculture, horticulture, pharmacovigilance etc. relating to
medicinal plants. Detailed guidelines for authors are also

Manuscript Submission:
Manuscripts for Research articles submitted
to AYU journal should be divided into the following sections:
Covering Letter:
All
the authors will have to submit an undertaking (in the format
specified by the journal) that the paper has not been published
/ submitted for publication elsewhere as well as indicating
their consent to be co-authors. Each author should give his/her
names as well as the address and appointment at the time the
work was done, plus current address for correspondence including
telephone, fax number and email address. One of the authors
could be identified as principal author, who would be
responsible for the contents of the paper as well as all
communications. A senior author may sign the undertaking by
authors for a junior author who has left the institution and
whose whereabouts are not known and take the responsibility.
Manuscripts:
Paper must be in English. It should be typed double spaced on
one side of a good quality paper and with 2 cm margins all
around and to be submitted in triplicate along with a soft copy
either in CD or sent by email. Receipts of the papers will be
acknowledged.
The format of the manuscript
should be as follows:
Title and authors: The title
should describe the contents fully but concisely. Names and
affiliations along with the name of institution at which the
research has been carried out should be given with full postal
and email address. The principal author to whom referee’s
comments and reprints are to be sent should be indicated. A
short running title of the article may also be given.
Abstract: The abstract,
not more than 200 words, should clearly cover the background,
aims and objectives of the study; methods, indicating the study
protocol and statistical tests used; results, the important
observations; discussion, describing the reasoning and
probabilities for the results obtained. It should also conclude
main concrete implications of the study. Please minimize the use
of abbreviations and do not cite references in the abstract.
Key words: A list of up to six relevant keywords should be
given.
Introduction: A concise
account is required about the background to the subject, its
significance and its relationships to earlier works with
references and aims and objectives of the study.
Material and Methods:
These should be presented with sufficient clarity and details
about the design of
the study, the samples, type of participants or materials
involved, a clear description of all interventions and
comparisons, and the type of analysis used, including a power
calculation if appropriate.
Observations and Results:
The original and important findings should be stated. Illustrate
results with figures or tables wherever necessary but these
should be kept to the minimum.
Discussion:
The
principal conclusions drawn from the results and their important
implications should be discussed. The interventions, possible
adversities and observed drug reactions may also be discussed.
Conclusions:
This should state clearly the main conclusions of the research
and give a clear explanation of their importance and relevance.

References:
These should be numbered consecutively and placed as endnote. In
the text they should be indicated above the line
(superscripted). These should be arranged as: the name(s) or
author(s) followed by the year of publication. e.g. “Mehta,
(1981)” except when the author’s name is part of the sentence,
e.g. “Mehta (1981) has shown that...” References to works by two
authors should give both names; references to works by more than
two authors would give the names of the first author followed by
et. al. e.g. “Shah et. al. (1993)”.
References to periodicals should include the following elements: name(s) and initial (s)
of author (s), year of publication, title of the periodical;
volume number (Arabic numerals); issue number where appropriate;
first and last page number, e. g Shah M.B., Patel K. N. and
Chauhan M.G. 1993 Contribution to Indigenous drugs part, Celosia
argentia, Int. J. pharmacog., 31, 223-234.
Reference to books
should include: name(s) and initial(s) of author (s); title of
the book; name(s) of publisher, year of publication; page
number; The references from Ayurvedic samhitas should
also include name of Sthana (section),Adhyaya (chapter) number
and Shloka (verse) number.
References from the
websites/online sources
should include the URL for online source as well as the date of

Tables:
Tables should be typed separately and numbered
consecutively in the order of their first citation in the text.
The title should be brief and column headings should also be
short. Type or print each table with double spacing on a
separate sheet of paper. Authors should place explanatory matter
in footnotes, not in the heading. Explain all nonstandard
abbreviations in footnotes, and use symbols like*, †, ‡,
||,¶,**,††,‡‡, in sequence. Identify statistical measures of
variations, such as standard deviation and standard error of the
mean. Each table must be cited in the text. If data from another
published or unpublished source is used, permission and
acknowledgement of that source should be mentioned fully.
Illustrations (Figures):
These
should be either professionally drawn and photographed, or
submitted as photographic-quality digital prints. Photographs
should be submitted in duplicate with the title of the paper,
name of the author penciled on the backside. Numbers should be
given to each photograph, which should be cited in the text. The
pictures should be good quality prints on glossy paper showing
sufficient total contrast. In addition, the electronic files of
figures in a format (for example, JPEG or GIF with high
resolution) that will produce high-quality image, suitable for
printing, should also be submitted. The authors should review
the images of such files on a computer screen before submitting
them to be sure they meet their own quality standards.
For x-ray films, scans, and other diagnostic images,
as well as pictures of pathology specimens or photomicrographs,
send sharp, glossy, black-and-white or color photographic
prints, usually 127 x 173 mm (5 x 7 inches). Titles and detailed
explanations belong in the legends-not on the illustrations
themselves.
Figures should be numbered consecutively according
to the order in which they have been cited in the text. If a
figure has been published previously, acknowledge the original
source and submit written permission from the copyright holder
to reproduce the figure. Permission is required irrespective of
authorship or publisher except for documents in the public
domain. Authors should consult the journal about requirements
for figures submitted in electronic formats.
Units of Measurement:
only Standard International units for measurements should be used.
Abbreviations and
Symbols:
Standard abbreviations only should be used. Avoid
abbreviations in the title of the manuscript. The spelled-out
abbreviation followed by the abbreviation in parenthesis should
be used on first mention unless the abbreviation is a standard
unit of measurement.
Hindi Saramsha:
The author should also submit Hindi translation of the title &
abstract not exceeding 200 words, using Sarjudas Hindi font.
Copyright Transfer Agreement:
Author(s) will be asked to sign a transfer of copyright
agreement, which recognizes the common interest that both
journal and author(s) have in the protection of copyright. It
will also allow the publisher to tackle copyright infringements
ourselves without having to go back to authors each time.
All papers submitted to AYU will
undergo editorial review first. Further, to
ensure fairness, each manuscript will be assessed anonymously by
two independent reviewers /subject experts and constructive
criticism, suggestions provided by the assessors (if any) will
be forwarded to the author/s for necessary modifications. The
paper will be accepted for publication only after such
modifications are fulfilled by the author/s. The authors will be
provided 10 reprints of their published paper and one
complimentary copy of AYU.
Manuscripts, illustrations and all
communications relating to them should be submitted to the
