Comparative Pharmaceutico-clinical Study Of Vasa Avaleha Prepared by Vasa Swarasa And Vasa Kwatha W.S.R to Its Swasahara Effect, by Dr. Ankit Gupta, M.D. (Ayu) Scholar, Dept. of Rasashastra & B.K., on 01/09/2005, under the supervision of Dr. P.K. Prajapati, Reader & HOD- Rasashastra & B.K., I.P.G.T & R.A. as Guide and Dr. A.K. Choudhary & Dr. Subrata De as Co-guides.

Twelve patients of Tamakswasa (Bronchial Asthma) divided into two groups, were treated by 1) Vasa Avaleha (Adhatoda vasica swaras) -10 gm twice a day with Lukewarm water, 2) Vasa Avaleha (kwatha) - 10 gm twice a day with lukewarm water. Duration of treatment was 28 days. Prakshep dravya in formulation includes Pippali (Piper longum), Honey, Jaggery, Ghrita. After a course of therapy, symptomatic relief was observed in: Swasakastata (70.6%), Kasa (65.2%), Pinasa (37.1%) in group – 1 whereas in group -2 relief was observed in: Swasakastata (65.2%), Kasa (60%), Pinasa (40.8%). In analytical study variation in the percentage of total solid content in Swarasa was seen according to season. L.O.D. which is about 10 – 12% in all samples is indicative of moisture content. The presence of reducing sugar shows mono and disaccharides sugar i.e. Glucose and fructose. Sugar content in both samples is above 65% which may act as self-preservative. In Swarasa, percentage of methanol soluble extractive is more which is indicative of presence of non-polar compounds. TLC shows Rf value of standard (vasicine) is same for both the samples (Swarasa & Avaleha (s)), which is indicative of presence of vasicine. In Avaleha (swaras) trailing is seen, this may be due to vasicinone which may not be separated from Vasicine.  Comparison of Kwatha and Avaleha (kwath) to standard vasicine and vasicinone shows presence of both the alkaloids, but the presence of vasicinone is more because during Kwatha preparation vasicine oxidize to vascinone. HPLC shows that vasicine is almost same in the both sample of Avaleha but vasicinone is more in the Avaleha which is prepared from Kwatha.
