LIFE

Abstract :
The physiologic preponderance of dosas in
the body during childhood or middle are vis-à-vis
rhythmic variation of dosas during menstrual cycle
and appearance of artava in childhood and influence
of vata in later age make the girl or woman vulnerable
to menometrorrhagia (asrgdara). During puberty
incidence of paittika asrgdara and in pre-menopausal
age incidence of vatika asrgdara is more, incidence
of kaphaja asrgdara in these age in much less.
Pain during menstruation and increased intermenstrual
period are common findings in vatika asrgdara
, while more blood loss is seen in paittika asrgdara
cases. R. tablets give encouraging improvement
in all cases of menometrorrhagia, however, specific
enema therapy improves the efficacy of R. tablets,
more so in vatika asrgdara cases. Benificial effect
of R. tablets is due to specific properties as-well-as
prabhava of drug, the basti (enema) therapy inhances
the efficacy by normalising vata dosa, basic causative
factor of disease, specially in later age group
cases. Due to normalising of Basic dosa the incidence
of recurrence is also less in this group. This
study corroborates the observations of ancient
sages and opens a new vista for understanding
basic physiopathology as-well-as management of
menometrorrhagia at extremes of reproductive life.

Abstract :
Paralysis agitans. Described by James Parkinson
in 1817, is independent redescription of Kampavata
(Kampa:tremor, Vata metabolic derangement Predisposing
to neurologic and mental diseases) described in
Ayureda centuries ago Various signs and symptoms
associated with the disease such as akinesia,
drooling, reptilian stare, tremor, constant somnolence,
rigidity, and dementia were described in Caraka
Samhita. A more clear definition. 'tremors of
hands and feet, difficulty with body movements.
Dustytbed ub Caraja Sanhita (stnotins of Kanpavata)
'' is found in Basavarajiyam (1400AD). Several
preparations containing Mucuna pruriens (Atmagupta,
Sanskrit) were descrided for treatment of patients
with Kampavata. The major active compound present
in Mucuna pruriens is levodopa. Levodopa is the
major drug used in the treatment of Parkinson's
disease. The evidence suggests that Parkinson's
disease existed in ancient India under the name
Kampavata and herbal preparations containing levodopa
were administered to alleviate the symptoms of
the disease centuries before such a drug came
into modern medicine.

ROLE OF BRAHMI (Bacopa monnieri)
IN THE MANAGEMENT OF SENILE DEMENTIA

Centre of Psychosomatic and Biofeedback Medicine,
Faculty of Ayurveda,
Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University,
Varanasi - 221 005(India)
Abstract :
Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) belonging to the family
Scrophulariaceae has been described as medhya
drug used to improve memory and intellect. In
different experimental studies, the oral administration
of the organic extract of Brahmi showed beneficial
effect in regulating the altered levelo of brain
biogenic emines in relation to age by arresting
the loss of acerycholine and GABA levels in the
brain. Further, Brahmi also facilitated the congnitive
deficiency in experimental rats by reducing the
number of trials to achieved critrion of learning.
The different clinical studies showed that Brahmi
slowed down the process of subsequent acetycholine
reduction among the treated group of senile dementia
cases. It also regulated the altered level of
plasma cortisol alongwith alpha and beta brain
wave patterns among these cases. On the basis
of above findings, it is speculated that some
components of drug Brahmi perhaps cross the blood-brain
barrier and regulate the cholinergic system by
acting on some specific receptors in the brain.
Perhaps this drug also influences the GABA aergic
pathway to prevent further change in metabolism
of biogenic amines and regulates the human behaviour.
