Abstract : Chinese traditional medicine is a comprehensive
holistic healthcare disipline. The theoretical
concept of Chinese Medicine is based on five elements,
"Chi" energy, body mechanics and the
Yin and Yang concepts. Treatment includes herbal,
massage, acupunchre, etc. There are various toxins
and neurotoxins described in Chinese Medicine
including, animals, plants and inorganic toxins.
Ayurvedic vaidyas described anatomical, physiological
and therapeutic aspects of medical and surgical
disordersz. Many of the disorder described lack
sufficient modern scientific sophistication, however,
considering their clinical observations, diagnostic
acumen and therapeutic modalities they deserve
due recognition. Toxicology as an independent
section is Ayurveda. There are a large number
of toxins, biological, non- biological and artificial,
described in Ayurveda. Clinical symptoms of rabies,
lathyrism and other conditions are described.
Judicious use of Ayuvedic herbal preparation is
helpful. Excessive use and crude Ayurvedic preparation
if not properly supervised can produce side effects
such as lead, mercury and metal poisoning. The
local and systemic reactions to various compounds
and their antidotes are described. In addition
to historical aspect of this paper the current
utility of potential toxicity of inorganic and
organic toxins used in Chines and Ayurvedic medicine
either non purified and as a contaminants.
