Abstract:
Roots of Cynoglossum glochidiatum Wall.ex. Benth of
Family Boraginaceae identified as source plant of Tejaraj is
being used by tribal people of Orissa (Kandha) for treating male
sexual dysfunctions and infertility. A pharmacological study was
carried out to evaluate toxic effect (if any) of the root ofC. glochidiatumin two phases i.e. short term(15 days) in high dose(2500
mg./kg.) and long term (60 days)in human equivalent dose (500 mg./kg.) in albino rats.
The parameters studied were ponderal, haematological,
biochemical and histopathological changes. The test drug did not
produce any mortality or significant toxic effect on different
organs except for producing increase in blood urea level and
moderate fatty degenerative changes in liver.
