In
the year 1954 Government of India had established
a research center for Ayurveda at Jamnagar. Further
a Post Graduate Training Center in Ayurveda was
also started in the year 1956. These two institutes
were amalgamated in 1963 and renamed as Institute
of Post Graduate Teaching and Research. This Institution
is fully financed by Government of India and administered
by the University.
This premier postgraduate
teaching Institution of Ayurveda has best facilities
available for teaching and research in Ayurveda.
Till date nearly 1100 Post Graduate theses have
been submitted and awarded the degree. Nearly
60 theses have been awarded the degree of Ph.D.
Infrastructure & Facilities - This Institute
has mainly four constituent parts i.e.: -

Hospital Building
|
The
two hospitals provide Outpatients and 150-bedded
Inpatients treatment facilities. Pathology and
biochemistry
laboratories provide necessary support for modern
investigations. It also has the facility for X -
Ray, Ultra Sonography, E.C.G. etc.
In this hospital most
of the facilities are provided free of cost with
full financial support from Govt. of India. Poor
patients are provided free consultation, medicines,
food and clothing in this Hospital. Hospital has
the support of well-qualified physicians and provide
specialized treatment like Panchakarma and Ksharasutra
along with the treatment for all the diseases. These
hospitals are also used for the training and research
for Post Graduate and Ph.D. scholars.
A fully equipped Panchakarma
hospital provides various types of massages, fomentation
(sudation), Vaman, Virechan, Basti, Nasya, Shirodhara,
Pizichil etc. This hospital has a fully equipped
operation theatre and maternity room.
Post Graduate Institute maintains three hostels
viz. P.G. Boys hostel, P.G. Ladies hostel and International
Scholar's Hostel. Boys Hostel has a capacity of
100 single seated rooms and Ladies hostel has 40
single seated rooms. In International Scholar's
Hostel there are 20 rooms of which, five rooms are
fitted with Air Conditioners.
There are
nine teaching Departments in the Institute
and provide facility for teaching and research in
12 specialties for Post Graduate degree and doctorate
degree. After completion of three year course a
degree of Ayurveda Vachaspati M.D. (Ayu) is
awarded by the University. Thirty four stipendary seats
are available for the Indian students coming from
all over the country. Other five seats are reserved
for the Gujarat State nominee,
five seats for Govt. of India nominees and three
seats for foreign students recommended by Govt.
of India. |

Institute enrolls scholars for Ph.D. degree enrollment
on regular residential basis. These students have
to devote minimum two years duration for research
in the concerned dept.
Department of Basic Principles
-
This department imparts the knowledge of Basic
Principles of Ayurvedic classics and history of
Ayurveda along with Sharir Rachana and Sharir
Kriya. Under this department nearly 165 post
graduate theses and 15 Ph.D theses have been awarded degree.
This department carries out research related to
Ayurvedic fundamental principles like Panchamahabhuta
& Tridosha and also conducts clinical trials
to assess the role of various basic principles
in the management of diseases. A well-equipped
laboratory is also established to work on the
fundamental principles of Ayurveda.
Department of Dravyaguna -
This department deals with the teaching of
herbal medicines, their identification,
properties, cultivation, preservation, etc. The
department has developed a very good herbarium
incorporating over 1000 drugs. The department
has got a collection of over 300 compilations on
single herbs prepared by postgraduate scholars.
It conducts Clinical trials to assess the
pharmacological properties of the herbs. More
than 145 P.G. and 9 Ph.D. theses
have been cleared under the department.
Department of Rasa Shastra
& Bhaishajya Kalpana -
This department imparts the knowledge of the properties
of various minerals, metals, poisonous drugs,
aquatic drugs, etc. Students are being trained
in classical and modern pharmaceutical procedures
regarding the preparation of drugs. The department
has a very good museum and more than 80 compilations
on Rasa Shastra. More than 160 P.G. & 12 Ph.D.
theses have been prepared in the department. This
department is taking keen interest in developing
substantial parameters for standardization and
quality control of Ayurvedic formulations, which
could be acceptable internationally. Studies are
carried out on Ayuvedic formulations with special
reference to toxicity study of mercurial and metallic
drugs.
Department of Kayachikitsa -

Pizichil Massage
|
This
department teaches and conducts postgraduate studies
in the subjects of Roga Nidana, Kayachikitsa, Pancha
Karma, Manasa Roga, Rasayan and Vajikarana. Department
provides basic medical services to the hospital
and conducts research on various aspects of the
diseases. The department has conducted many clinical
studies on the chronic diseases like paralysis,
Parkinson's disease, sciatica, backache, joint disorders,
collagen disorders, bronchial asthma, eczema, psoriasis,
colitis, dysentery, acid peptic disorders, diabetes
mellitus, neurological problem, minor psychiatric
diseases, stress etc. An effort has been made to
understand the pathogenesis of these diseases as
per Ayurveda and clinical parameter for the research
evaluation has been standardized.
This department has
conducted more than 200 clinical trials on the effectivity
and standardization of various Pancha Karma procedures.
Various types of Basties, Vaman Karma, Virechan
Karma have been studied and their role in the management
of chronic disorders have been studied. Snehana
Karma and Nasya Karma have also been studied extensively.
Department has established
a good semenological laboratory for the studies
in the field of Vajikarana. Many P.G. and Ph.D.
level research works have been carried on various
aspects of male reproductive dysfunctions. Many
clinical trials on the effectiveness of herbs and
Ayurvedic compounds have been conducted.
Rasayana is another
field in which extensive studies have been carried
out. Various aspects of Rasayana have been studied
thoroughly and many new concepts have been established.
Concept of organ specific Rasayana has been established
and the role of Rasayana drugs like Amalaki, Ashwagandha,
Guduchi, Shatawari, Madhuyashti, Bhallataka, etc
in the management of chronic incurable diseases
has been established. More than 350 P.G. and 22
Ph.D. theses have been submitted under this department.
Diploma in Pancha Karma is also awarded to 10 students.
