Department of Shalya -
This department imparts training and teaching
in the classical surgical procedures. This department
has a very good reputation for the treatment of
ano-rectal diseases like hemorrhoids, fistula
in ano and fissure in ano through the Ksharasutra
therapy (Alkaline Thread Cauterization). Extensive
research is being conducted on the management
of Ano-Rectal diseases by the alkaline thread
treatment. Studies on the role of various herbs
and herbomineral compound in ulcer healing have
also been conducted. The diseases like Benign
Prostates Hypertrophy and Urolithiasis have also
been treated. Blood letting therapy is also practiced
and studied in the department. Nearly 110 M.D.
and 5 Ph.D. theses have been awarded the degree.
Department is running
a project on cancer research and several P.G.
theses have been submitted on this subject. Some
significant contribution has been made in the
management of malignancies of throat, mouth and
intestine.

Department of Shalakya
-
This department deals with the diseases
of supraclavicular part of the body, which
includes ENT, Ophthalmology and dentistry.
This department looks after the patients
of Eye diseases, ENT and also runs a specialized
clinic for dentistry. The dental clinic
has a special provision for Jalandhar bandh
a specific local anesthesia process for
tooth extraction. Significant studies have
been carried out in the field of myopia,
refractive errors, tinitus, migraine, chronic
rhinitis, dental cavities, pyorrhea etc.
M.D. & Ph.D. theses have also been prepared
under this specialty.

Ksharasutra Therapy

Department of Kaumarbhritya -
This department teaches the pediatrics, gynecology
and obstratics. Department has full-fledged hospital
along with maternity ward for conducting labour.
Department has done significant research in the
management of antenatal and postnatal care,
common gynecological problems and children's
diseases. More than 135 P.G. and 10 Ph.D. theses have been
submitted in the department and awarded the degree.
Department of Literary Research
-
This department works under the guidance and collaboration
of Basic Principles Department. This department
is engaged in compiling Ayurvedic references from
Vedas, Upanishadas, Puranas and other ancient literature.
This department also conducts researches on the
available ancient manuscripts.

Research Laboratories

Pathology Laboratory -
Institute of P.G. teaching & Research has a well-equipped
pathology laboratory, which carries out the routine
hematological and pathological investigations to
support the diagnosis and researches. Laboratory
is supported by qualified technical staff to carry
out these tests. They also teach modern methodology
of research to P.G. students. Emphasis is also laid
on independent pathological and bacteriological
research.
Biochemistry Laboratory -
This laboratory has facility to carry out the routine
biochemical tests pertaining to blood. This laboratory
is supported by the qualified technical staff. Research
is being carried out on enzymological aspects with
regard to Ayurvedic drug composition.

Modern (Medical) Team
-
This Institute has a team of modern medical
doctors who carry out the clinical diagnostic
procedures like ECG, spirometry etc. This
team also conducts clinical teaching to
the P.G. students and guides them in their
researches when and wherever required. The
team also carries out research activity
with regard to modern interpretation of
Ayurvedic concepts and findings.

Pharmacology
Laboratory -
The Laboratory was started as a full-fledged research
laboratory in 1987. It is fairly well equipped and
staffed with qualified persons. The animal house
attached to the Laboratory fully meets the rats
and mice requirement of the Institute.
The main objective
of establishing the Laboratory was to undertake
pharmacological studies on drugs and formulations
used in Ayurvedic therapeutics to provide pharmacological
basis to their clinical applications and also to
elucidate toxicological profile of selected preparations,
mainly mineral and metal preparations.
Training and supervisions
are provided for students registered for M.D. (Ayu),
Ph.D., B.Pharm, M.Pharm and M.Sc. (Medicinal plants)
in the University. It also offers consultancy in
the field of drug research besides undertaking research
projects on contract basis.
At present the main
areas of research are - adaptogenic, immunomodulation,
hepatoprotective, and spermatogenesis enhancement
and aphrodisiac activities evaluation in single
and compound Ayurvedic preparations. Studies are
also carried out for evaluating anti-ulcer, anti-inflammatory,
anti-arthritic, anti-cataract, anti-diabetic, hypolipidaemic
and psychoneuropharmacological activities.
Based on the data generated from the studies
carried out in the Laboratory more than 40
papers have been published in national and
international scientific journals and also equal
number of presentations has been made in
different seminars and conferences. Since its
inception more than 85 M.D. (Ayu) and Ph.D., scholars have utilized
the facilities of the laboratory to carry out experimental
part of their studies. |
