  Institute of Post Graduate Teaching & Research in Ayurveda
 
In the year 1952 Government of India had established a research center for Ayurveda at Jamnagar. Further a Post Graduate Training Center in Ayurveda was also started in the year 1956. These two institutes were amalgamated in 1963 and renamed as Institute of Post Graduate Teaching and Research. This Institution is fully financed by Government of India and administrated by Gujarat Ayurved University.


 This premier postgraduate teaching Institution of Ayurveda has best facilities available for teaching and research in Ayurveda. Till date nearly 1138 Post Graduate theses have been submitted and awarded the degree. Nearly 115 theses have been awarded the degree of Ph.D.

Teaching Departments -
 

There are nine teaching faculties in the Institute and provide facility for teaching and research in 13 specialties for Post Graduate and doctorate degrees. After successful completion of three year course a degree of Ayurveda Vachaspati M.D. (Ayu)/ Ayurveda Dhanvantari M.S. (Ayu) is awarded by the University. Thirty four stipendiary seats are available for the Indian students coming from all over the country. Among these, three seats are reserved for the teachers and medical officers of Gujarat state Ayurvedic colleges, three seats for Govt. of India nominees and three seats for foreign students recommended by Govt. of India.Institute enrolls scholars for Ph. D. degree on regular residential basis. These students have to devote minimum two years duration for research in the concerned department.

Institute enrolls scholars for Ayurved Vidyavaridhi, Ph.D. on regular residential basis. These students have to devote minimum two years duration for research in the concerned department.
 
Department of Basic Principles -
 
This department imparts the knowledge of Basic Principles of Ayurvedic classics and history of Ayurveda along with Sharira Rachana and Sharir Kriya. Under this department nearly 198 post graduate theses and 21 Ph.D theses have been awarded degree. This department carries out research related to Ayurvedic fundamental principles like Panchamahabhuta & Tridosha and also conducts clinical trials to assess the role of various basic principles in the management of diseases. A well-equipped laboratory is also established to work on the fundamental principles of Ayurveda.
 
Literary Research Unit  -  This unit works under the guidance and collaboration of Basic Principles Department. This unit is engaged in compiling Ayurvedic references from Veda, Upanishadas, Puranas and other ancient literature and also conducts researches on the available ancient manuscripts
Department of Dravyaguna -
 
This department deals with the teaching of different aspects related to herbal medicines, their identification, properties, cultivation, preservation, etc. The department has developed a very good herbarium incorporating over 1000 drugs. It also has a collection of over 400 compilations on single herbs prepared by postgraduate scholars. It conducts Clinical trials to assess the pharmacological properties of the herbs. Based on the research work carried out in the department more than 170 P.G. and 14 Ph.D. theses have been prepared.
Department of Rasa Shastra & Bhaishajya Kalpana -
 
This department imparts the knowledge of the properties of various minerals, metals, poisonous drugs, aquatic drugs, etc. Students are being trained in classical and modern pharmaceutical procedures related to the preparation of drugs. The department has a very good museum and more than 80 compilations on Rasa Shastra. More than 193 P.G. & 14 Ph.D. theses have been prepared in the department. This department is taking keen interest in developing substantial parameters for standardization and quality control of Ayurvedic formulations. Studies are carried out on Ayurvedic formulations with special reference to toxicity study of mercurial and metallic drugs.


Department of Kayachikitsa -

This department teaches and conducts postgraduate studies in the subjects of Roga Nidana and Kayachikitsa. It provides basic medical services to the hospital and conducts research on various aspects of the diseases. The department has conducted many clinical studies on the chronic diseases like paralysis, Parkinson's disease, sciatica, backache, joint disorders, collagen disorders, bronchial asthma, eczema, psoriasis, colitis, dysentery, acid peptic disorders, diabetes mellitus, neurological problems, minor psychiatric diseases, stress etc. Efforts are being made to understand the pathogenesis of these diseases as per the concepts of Ayurveda and clinical parameter for the research evaluation of the diseases described in Ayurveda are being standardized.
 
Department has established a good research laboratory for the studies in the field of Vajikarana. Many P.G. and Ph.D. level research works have been carried out on various aspects of male reproductive disorders and sexual dysfunctions. Many clinical trials on the effectiveness of herbs and Ayurvedic compounds have been conducted.
Rasayana is another field in which extensive studies have been carried out. Various aspects of Rasayana have been studied thoroughly and many new concepts have been established. Concept of organ specific Rasayana has been established and the role of Rasayana drugs like Amalaki, Ashwagandha, Guduchi, Shatawari, Madhuyashti, Bhallataka, etc in the management of chronic incurable diseases has been established. More than 361 P.G. and 34 Ph.D. theses have been submitted under this department.

Department of Panchakarma & Manasa Roga -
 
This Faculty teaches and conducts postgraduate studies in the subjects of Panchakarma and Manasa Roga.  Department provides basic medical services to the hospital and conducts research on various aspects of the diseases. The department has conducted many clinical studies on the chronic diseases like paralysis, Parkinson’s disease, sciatica, backache, joint disorders, collagen disorders, bronchial asthma, eczema, psoriasis, neurological problem, minor psychiatric diseases, stress etc. This department has conducted more than 202 clinical trials on the affectivity and standardization of various Pancha Karma procedures. Various types of Beasties, Vaman Karma, Virechan Karma have been studied and their role in the management of chronic disorders have been studied. Snehana Karma and Nasya Karma have also been studied extensively. More than 66 P.G. and 4 Ph.D. theses have been submitted under this department. Diploma in Panch Karma has been also awarded to 10 students. 
 
Department of Shalya -
 
This department imparts training and teaching in the classical surgical procedures. This faculty provides clinical consultation, surgical and para surgical services to patients attending IPD and OPD sections of the hospital. This department has a very good reputation for the treatment of ano-rectal diseases like hemorrhoids, fistula in ano and fissure in ano through the Ksharasutra therapy (Alkaline Thread Cauterization). Extensive research is being conducted in the management of Ano-Rectal diseases by the Ksharasutra therapy.

Various herbs and herbomineral compound in wound healing, Benign Prostates Hypertrophy, Urolithiasis  and the role of blood letting in various diseases is also being practiced and studied in the department. Nearly 111 M.D. and 7 Ph.D. theses have been awarded the degree. Department is running a project on cancer research and several P.G. theses have been submitted on this subject. Some significant contribution has been made in the management of malignancies of throat, mouth and intestine.
