| Pharmacognosy Laboratory has been a part of the Central Institute of Research in Indigenous Systems of Medicine (CIRISM) at Jamnagar since 1954. Afterwards the Department was renamed as Pharmacognosy Laboratory and it is functioning as one of the five Laboratories in the Institute of Post-Graduate Teaching & Research in Ayurveda. The Laboratory is well equipped and staffed by highly qualified and well-experienced staff members and has facility for carrying out research on various aspects of Pharmacognosy of medicinal plants. It is also involved in teaching activities.
At present the laboratory has multifarious activities including teaching and giving guidance to M.D. (Ayu.) and Ph.D. Scholars; imparting theoretical and practical training to students of Post-Graduate and Graduate courses like M. Pharm (Ayu.), B. Pharma (Ayu.) and M. Sc. (Medicinal Plants). Resource development of Medicinal Plants, Establishment of tissue culture laboratory, Green Houses, etc preparation of CD for Ayurvedic Medicinal Plants, publication of books on Ayurvedic Medicinal Plants and Research Articles etc.
In view of the large number of medicinal herbs that form the bulk of the therapeutic armamentarium of Ayurveda, it is of vital importance to ensure that only genuine herbs/drugs are used in all of its various recipes. The Department has surveyed and collected Ayurvedic medicinal plants from different states of India including Gujarat, Rajasthan, U.P., Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The results of the survey have already been published in various Scientific Journals.
- The Laboratory has a well-established Herbarium of Medicinal Plants with morethan 1300 species of plants belonging to 146 plant families with all relevant information.
- Experimental cultivation of Ayurvedic medicinal plants has been started in 1954. Rauvolfia serpentina and R. tetraphylla (Sarpagandha) have been cultivated for the first time in Gujarat and their alkaloidal contents have been improved. More than 200 species of medicinal plants have already been raised in various gardens of the University. A new species of Tephrosia Pers (Leguminosae) has been reported from Jamnagar.
- The Laboratory was involved in training programmes for tribals and forest Beat Guards in identification, method of collection, preservation and cultivation of Medicinal Plants have been undertaken with the assistance of WHO and Ministry of Health, Govt. of India.
- More than 200 colour photographs and transparencies of Medicinal plants have been prepared.
- Establishment of tissue culture laboratory, Green Houses, etc preparation of CD for Ayurvedic Medicinal Plants, publication of books on Ayurvedic Medicinal Plants and Research Articles are also being undertaken.
Hostipals
The two hospitals provide Outpatients and 150-bedded Inpatients treatment facilities. Pathology and biochemistry laboratories provide necessary support for modern investigations. It also has the facility for X - Ray, Ultra Sonography, E.C.G. etc. |

In this hospital most of the facilities are provided free of cost with full financial support from Govt. of India. Poor patients are provided free consultation, medicines, food and clothing in this Hospital. It has the support of well-qualified physicians and provide specialized treatment like Panchakarma and Ksharasutra along with the treatment for all the diseases. These hospitals are also used for the training and research for Post Graduate and Ph.D. scholars
A fully equipped Panchakarma hospital provides various types of massages, fomentation (sudation), Vaman, Virechan, Basti, Nasya, Shirodhara, Pizichil etc. This hospital has a fully equipped operation theatre and maternity room. |

| Post Graduate Institute maintains three hostels viz. P.G. Gents hostel, P.G. Ladies hostel and International Scholar's Hostel. Gents Hostel has a capacity of 110 single seated rooms and Ladies hostel has 40 single seated rooms. In International Scholar's Hostel there are 20 rooms of which, ten rooms are fitted with Air Conditioners. |

| The Institute has a separate IT
Centre for the benefit of research scholars and faculty members.
The IT Centre is having 16 state of art computer units with the
broadband network and it is open from 9 AM to 8 PM on all
working days and 9.00AM to 1.00PM on Sundays and Official
Holidays. |

| The Post Graduate Institute of Gujarat Ayurveda University has been approved as collaborative center of WHO since 1977. Many fellows from the countries of South East Asia like Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Thailand, Myanmar have visited and received training in various specialties of Ayurveda. This university has also organized conferences in collaboration with WHO on medicinal plants. |

| The Institute has its own Guest
House having 2 VIP, 7 AC and 10 non AC rooms. Recenlty
Government of India has given sanction to build an additional
floor in the Guest House with an approximate cost of Rs. 50
lacs. |
